Soggy Again

Another wet one as the title suggests with plenty of drizzle to put a dampener on things. For some now unfathomable reason I decided to take a walk along the Welland Valley between Cottingham and Gretton. Unfortunately despite the rain there were hardly any flooded areas which made for for a tedious as well as a wet wander.

Bonny Scotland

One of the few areas with any water was just below Cottingham where a sizeable flock of Wigeon were the only thing of note. From there it was just plain dull until I'd nearly reached Gretton where a croaking Raven caused a mild flutter of interest. Leaving the valley behind me I took the footpath that goes up from the road towards Brookfield Plantation. The flooded quarry hosted a trilling Dabchick and there was a large mixed flock of Starlings and thrushes in the area too. The plantation itself was a bit more interesting than what had gone before with a Woodcock providing the first sighting of note. Both Siskins and a Nuthatch were also seen while a Tawny Owl must have mistaken the dull conditions for night as it hooted several times. On my way home I checked in on the Peregrines and was pleased to see both birds on site though not surprisingly both had chosen sheltered spots to sit out the rain. One final highlight and perhaps the best bird of the day was a female Stonechat next to Cockerell Road. No photos today due to the weather but I'll put a few scenic shots from Scotland in to make up for it.
