Black-necked Grebes

I took an after work trip over to Titchmarsh nature reserve this afternoon in the company of Alan Shorrock, our aim was to catch up with the Black-necked Grebes that have recently been reported. Yesterday there was an adult and three well grown juveniles but today the adult had gone leaving just the kids behind. The weather behaved itself for the most part and it stayed dry for the duration of our visit.

Scarce Chaser and Red Admiral

On our way to the North Hide we saw a few insects with a male Scarce Chaser and a Red Admiral the most noteworthy. From the hide itself the grebe trio didn't take too long to find and we enjoyed some prolonged views of them as they swam around the lake. Although they were always fairly distant and often in poor light I took a few ropey record shots before we left. Only one other bird of interest was noted and that was a Common Sandpiper. One additional pleasing thing was to see that the Black-headed Gull colony appears to have produced a good number of chicks despite the ill effects of avian flu.

Black-necked Grebes.
