Beating The Weather

The forecast for today was far from promising with strong and blustery winds coupled to a risk of thundery showers threatening to put a dampener on things. With most of the unpleasantness being promised for the period after midday I decided to take a short walk around Eurohub here in Corby.

Meadow Brown, Marbled White and Ringlet

Not surprisingly many insects were choosing to hunker down deep in the grass and at first it was only a few brown butterflies that braved the breeze. Ringlets and Meadow Browns were the commonest with far fewer Marbled Whites and Gatekeepers joining them on the wing. During a few brief sunny spells a few skippers, Small and Large began to emerge from wherever they had been hiding and the same combo of whites also appeared. There was one fairly long period of sunshine which drew out both Red Admiral and a Comma but as the winds began to increase in speed it became difficult for them.

Large White, Large and Small Skippers

Joining the butterflies on the wing were a few dragons and damsels of which Willow Emeralds were probably the most interesting. My first county emeralds of the year looked as if they had emerged in good numbers with at least twenty tenerals showing around the pond. Other damsels present were Blue-tailed, Azure and Common Blue while dragons were represented by Brown Hawker and Emperor. The only bird of note was a Kingfisher which flashed past as I was looking for dragons at the pond.

Willow Emeralds.
