Double Dipping

Another trip to Fineshade today in the company of Alan Shorrock where we managed to dip on the Chequered Skippers for a second time. Despite the sunny and warm conditions butterflies in general seemed to be quite scarce and it was far from being our best day out. That's not to say that it was a total failure however as there were a few year firsts but overall it was a little disappointing.

Painted Lady and Dingy Skipper

Best butterflies were a tatty looking Painted Lady which looked as if it could have just arrived from the continent and a Large Skipper which rudely didn't hang around for pictures. Amongst the butterflies that were seen Dingy and Grizzled Skippers were the pick of the rest, other species included Small Heath, Brimstone, Holly and Common Blue. Of the other insects noted today first for the year Black-tailed Skimmer and Emperor were the pick, one stayed around for pictures and the other didn't... Other odes seen today included Broad-bodied Chaser and Common Blue Damselflies.

Not too much else to mention, several Ravens were either heard or seen while both Cuckoo and two Grasshopper Warblers were also heard singing.

Garden Warblers.
