Browns To The Fore

Today's weather was better than the forecast suggested it would be with a lot more sunshine than expected though the breeze was pretty strong. I spent the morning wandering around Priors Hall where a selection of butterflies and odes were on offer. Although there was nothing out of the ordinary to report it was good to see butterflies in such good numbers after a couple of weeks in June when very few were on the wing.

Gatekeeper and Small Skipper

My first county Gatekeepers and first Small Skippers were the highlights of the day. Lots of browns are flitting about at the moment with Meadow Browns, Marbled Whites and Ringlets showing strongly, there were a few Small Heaths too. Large Skippers seem to be having a good year with plenty on show today. The only other species that I saw was Green-veined White, other whites were noted but not identified.

Marbled White and Four-spotted Chaser

I saw my first Ruddy Darters of the year as well as some Common Darters while other dragons were Emperor, Four-spotted Chaser, Black-tailed Skimmer and Southern Hawker. Biggest surprise amongst the damsels was a Large Red, it's been a few weeks since I last saw one. Not much in the way of birds was seen, a Ringed Plover was present at the quarry lake but that was it as far as interesting birds went. A single Muntjac represented the mammals but there was nothing else of note.
