All Over By Lunch

Rain showers blighted Alan Shorrock's and my visit to Eyebrook this morning and eventually forced an early retreat as they got heavier and more persistent. With little prospect of seeing any insects we opted to see what birds the reservoir might produce, the return wader passage has just kicked in and a few had been noted here recently.

Great White Egret

First and most obvious bird was a Great White Egret feeding at the Sharp End, during our visit it looked as if was going to leave on several occasions but always returned. A near adult Yellow-legged Gull was moving up and down the reservoir and harassed several juvenile Black-headed Gulls as it did so. Two Ospreys paid a call, one caught a small fish and was chased briefly by the other before it departed. The other seemed to hang around for a while and treated us to some decent views though rain meant that photo opportunities were limited. On the wader front three moulting male Ruffs were the highlight and there were at least three Little Ringed Plovers, two adults and a juvenile. By this point the rain had become more than a nuisance and we headed off to the pub for a spot of lunch - hopefully tomorrow's weather will be kinder!
