Bright But Chilly

Now I'm not sure if there is such a thing as an Indian winter but if there is then we've been enjoying one for the last week or so. With temperatures remaining decidedly low it's had a noticeable effect on the emergence of insects though birds continue to move through. This morning dawned sunny though cool with the grass whitened by an overnight frost as I headed for my now usual destination of Deene.

Buzzard and Shelduck

Birding kicked off with a Willow Warbler singing somewhat half heartedly in the Old Village. From here I went to check on the Ringed Plovers and was pleased to see that the pair are still present and being serenaded by another Willow Warbler. The quarry lake at Priors Hall was a bit on the quiet side though there was much hustle and bustle around the Sand Martin colony. On the water itself a pair of Teal had been joined by a drake Shelduck, they're fairly regular here at this time of the year.

Swallow and Goldfinch

The inflow at Deene Lake had a Green Sandpiper and still rather a lot of Teal while the main lake held at least two Shelducks. Half a dozen Sand Martins were feeding low over the water and these may perhaps have been birds from the Priors colony ranging further in order to feed. Deenethorpe airfield provided the day's highlight with two male and a female Wheatear on show. I've been looking for these over the past couple of weeks so I was pleased to get good views of them. Also seen here were two pairs of Lapwing and a couple of Brown Hares. Little else was noted on my way home though i was treated to good views of a Blackcap.
