A Cold One

Winter truly arrived this morning with a mixture of frost and fog helping to make things feel even colder than they have of late. Alan Shorrock and I popped along to Ecton this morning to check whether any Siberian Chiffchaffs were on view. There didn't appear to be any as far as we could tell but there was still a reasonable selection of birds to enjoy.

Grey Wagtail and Kingfisher

As we crossed the Nene near Cogenhoe the calls of Ring-necked Parakeets could be heard though we didn't stop to look for them. From the K121 bridge we saw at least half a dozen Chiffchaffs during our visit and also heard at least one Cetti's Warbler. A  minimum of two Green Sandpipers were in the general area and I had a brief view of a Water Rail as it swam across the brook. Other birds noted included Kingfisher and Grey Wagtails while on the neighbouring lakes there was a selection of wildfowl. With no sign of the mist rising and little hope of seeing sunshine we decided to move on to Summer Leys.

Stonechats

The Leys were quiet though there were a lot of Shovellers on the Main Lake and at least one Goldeneye too. The highlight was a pair of Stonechats that showed well from Pioneer Hide before they moved on. We had a quick look at the feeders where there were plenty of birds but nothing out of the ordinary. Last bird was a Great White Egret before we decided to swap Summer Leys for the altogether more hospitable atmosphere of the Saxon Tavern in Earls Barton.
