Better Than Last Week

This morning Alan Shorrock and I visited a sunny Aldwinckle Nature Reserve for a spot of autumnal birding. Several decent waders have been reported from here recently and we hoped to catch up with them. A stiff westerly breeze kept the temperatures down but conditions remained fairly pleasant as we made our way to the site of the old North Hide.

Grey Plover and Ruff.

Alan more than earned his keep as he found a couple of Ruffs feeding on the opposite shore, at first I couldn't find them as they disappeared into the cover of some grassy tussocks. Several sweeps of the general area eventually produced a sighting of a juvenile Grey Plover and then the Ruff duo. I don't see many Grey Plovers in Northants so was more than happy to watch this distant individual through the scope. My record shots of the plover were at the poorer end of the scale but I'm happy to share one with you here. All three waders were flushed on several occasions by passing raptors and it was on the last of these that we decided to leave. Not much else to report other than a couple of Migrant Hawkers.

Stonechats

Willowbrook Industrial Estate in Corby was our next port of call and Alan once again delivered the goods when he picked out a pair of Stonechats. A trio of passers-by moved the birds on though we did eventually catch up with them again and enjoyed some good views. Not much else by way of birds to report and it was left to Common Darters and Migrant Hawkers to provide further interest. Our final stop of the day produced sightings of a Peregrine at one of their favoured local sites.

Peregrine.
