A Phine Phinish To The Day

Yesterday a Red-backed Shrike at Eyebrook almost made me pull a sickie from work but it turned out to be more IBS rather than RBS as it moved on shortly after discovery which though bad for my year list was at least good for my attendance record! Another goody which appeared in Rutland during yesterday evening was a Grey Phalarope off the northern end of the dam at Rutland Water which apparently showed very well. Unlike that dratted shrike this bird was considerably better mannered and actually stayed around for people to enjoy.

Fast forward to this evening and I was due to have an evening meal at the Samuel Lloyd in Corby with my stepson though not before we had a pre prandial and rapidly scheduled diversion to Rutland Water! Having parked at the Sykes Lane car park it took a walk of less than a minute before I reached a small group of birders enjoying excellent views of the 1st winter phalarope. Swimming just of the shore it provided some really good photographic opportunities as it swam with a group of Mallards. Having had brilliant views and taken plenty of pics I was able to leave without incurring any parking charges - result! Honestly if this bird hangs around into tomorrow get over there and fill your boots, it's an absolute belter.
