Today I had to press my nose up against the grindstone again as I returned to work after my day of liberty. My thoughts however were diverted by the presence of two Sandwich Terns at Eyebrook Reservoir which arrived yesterday and continued their stay into today. I didn't for a moment imagine that the adult and juvenile would linger but this has been a good year for terns at the reservoir and the sterna duo must have found something to their liking. Alan and I once again teamed up with Eyebrook veteran Mick Ketley for an after work jaunt this evening.
| Adult and juvenile Sandwich Terns |
In evening sunshine we headed along to the sharp end and struck lucky almost immediately on arrival. A friendly birder put us on to both of the Sandwiches and I had good though distant views of my first ever sightings at the res. Both seemed rather settled and may well stay for beyond this evening, it's quite rare for these large terns to stay longer than a few hours at inland sites. There were a few waders on view too and these amounted to a Black-tailed Godwit, a female Ruff and five Dunlins while an adult Yellow-legged Gull was also noted. A stop at the island produced sightings of two Ringed Plovers and also an Osprey. We were able to read the ring of the latter which was a locally bred bird which was raised in 2020. The evening ended with dinner and a pint in the 'spoons in Corby to celebrate our success before going our separate ways.
